RECORD STRUCTURE

Database of Hus’s works contains documentation of works authored by Jan Hus or attributed to him (detailed information in ABOUT section). The basic structure is derived from the Library Reference Model (LRM), which defines a WORK as an abstract intellectual unit, followed by TEXT (here we combine the LRM items expression and manifestation) and MANUSCRIPT (in the LRM concept of item).

WORKS

(example of a record)

The basic element of the database is the WORK record, which includes the following items:

  • The title of the work, which is either original (author’s) or constructed (editor’s; Title originality field) and for which the language is specified (in the Title language field). Alternatively, Variant title is given with the same additional information in brackets (originality and language) – these can include varying titles that appear in medieval manuscripts, references in other medieval authors’ works, early modern prints or which are traditionally used in modern secondary literature.
  • BS identifier determines the order of the work in the repertory: BARTOŠ, František Michálek – SPUNAR, Pavel. Soupis pramenů k literární činnosti M. Jana Husa a M. Jeronýma Pražského = Catalogus fontium M. Johannis Hus et M. Hieronymi Pragensis opera exhibentium. Praha: Historický ústav ČSAV, 1965. 369 p. The numbers after the full stop (e.g. 5.01) indicate the order of the partial work (these numbers are auxiliary and do not always appear in the BARTOŠ–SPUNAR’s list).
  • MIHOO identifier specifies the volume of the Magistri Iohannis Hus Opera omnia edition in which the work was or will be published. The numbers in the edition are given in Roman numerals (e.g. XIV).
  • Authors indicates the author; the probability of authorship is given in brackets (the string n/a indicates that this value is not determined).
  • Date indicates the date of the work’s creation; the certainty of this date is indicated in brackets (values: confirmed | uncertain | doubtful | ante quem | post quem).
  • This is followed by Incipits and Explicits.
  • The record of the work concludes with references to MANUSCRIPT which lead to details about individual manuscript items in which the text is preserved and LITERATURE REFERENCE with references to specific items of secondary literature with precise pagination of information about the work.

TEXT

(example of a record)

  • The header of the text consists of its title.
  • Text type field specifies whether the text is an original or a translation, while the Language field indicates the language of the text (Latin predominates, followed by Czech with a two-line gap, and German is represented to a lesser extent).
  • Work reference field refers to the WORK record. The MANUSCRIPT LOCALIZATION section contains a reference to the manuscript in which the text is found, including the foliation (Scope field).

MANUSCRIPT

(example of a record)

  • The header of the record consists of the manuscript identifier, which is composed of the abbreviation of the institution and the shelf number (which is also listed in a separate field).
  • Preservation status field indicates whether the manuscript has been preserved or not (values: preserved | not preserved).
  • Geographical localization field provides a link to the institution that holds the manuscript.
  • DIGITAL LOCALIZATION section identifies publicly available bibliographic and/or full-text versions of the manuscript, specifying Source and Status (values: metadata | fulltext).
  • Text field lists all Hus’s texts that have been identified in the manuscript.

INSTITUTION

(example of a record)

  • The header of the record consists of the original name of the institution in the source language.
  • Institution type field includes the values library | museum | archive | university | religious institution.
  • Institution abbreviation field indicates the abbreviated name of the institution.
  • Institution code field refers to the institution’s record in the VIAF and/or ROR international systems.
  • Collection field specifies the institution’s sub-collections (their abbreviations are given after the full name in brackets).
  • Contact information, Institutional URL and Digital resource URL fields provide basic contact details for the institution.
  • Manuscripts section lists all manuscripts with identified Hus’s texts held by the institution in its collections.

LITERATURE

(example of a record)

  • The header of the record is determined by the title of the item.
  • Bibliographic data (Author, Source, Publication year, Volume, Scope, Language) follows. Content field specifies the type of information that the item contains in relation to Hus research: edition | translation | bibliography.
  • DIGITAL LOCALIZATION section lists publicly available bibliographic or full-text versions of the item, specifying Source and Status (values: metadata | fulltext).
  • The Works field indicates the WORKS to which the item relates.

BROWSING

Records in the database can be viewed using the BROWSE item in the main navigation menu. Most lists allow simple searching (labelled Enter a string), for which the following applies:

  • at least two characters must be entered (unless otherwise stated);
  • the system searches from the beginning of words (e.g. when you enter "nesen", it will find "nesená" but not "pronesená");
  • the system automatically expands to the right (e.g. when you enter krak, it will find krakov and krakovec, etc.);
  • the search does not distinguish between upper and lower case letters.

You can browse according to these parameters:

  • The Works link displays a list of all works organised according to BS identifier (see above); in addition, Title, Date, Incipit, Explicit and MIHOO edition volume are also listed. You can sort the table by clicking on the column name in the header and you can also simply search the list by entering a string in the Enter a string field; titles and variant titles are searched.
  • The Incipits and Explicits links display an alphabetically organised list of incipits or explicits, which can be simply searched using the Enter a string field.
  • The Manuscripts link displays a list of all identified manuscripts, whose designation consists of the abbreviation of the institution and the shelf number. You can search the list using the Enter a string field; in this case, the system can also work with a single-letter string.
  • The MIHOO edition link provides a chronologically arranged overview of the individual volumes of the Magistri Iohannis Hus Opera omnia edition.
  • The Literature link contains a list of literature items, which is organised by author and then by title. The list can be simply searched using the Enter a string field; the system searches the titles of the items.
  • The Institutions link displays a list of all institutions included in the database as manuscript holders. The list can be simply searched using the Enter a string field; the names of institutions are searched.

SEARCHING

Simple universal search is available via the box in the upper right corner, which is displayed on all pages except the structured search page. After entering a string and submitting it, the system searches for records and displays them in the structured search interface, where you can continue to refine your query.

Structured search (available via link SEARCH in the main navigation menu), which is subject to the general rules already mentioned for browsing (i.e. minimum string length of two characters, search from the beginning of words, expansion to the right and no case sensitivity), allows you to define a combined query with the following fields:

  • Any term: any string found in any type of record; simply: searching in the entire contents of the database
  • Title: term from the header (title) of any record
  • Author: name of author of primary sources or secondary literature
  • Datation (from) / Datation (to): the year must be entered.
  • Language (of the texts or the titles)
  • Incipit and Explicit
  • Shelf number of the manuscript; this is a stand-alone signature (e.g., 4 e 82) without an institution abbreviation (e.g., Plzeň MA) – you can search for this information in the Title field
  • Edition number: number in any edition; for MIHOO edition must be entered as a Roman numerals (e.g. XIV)
  • BS identifier: numerical identification of the work according to the above source (BARTOŠ – SPUNAR, 1965)

After entering the parameters and clicking on the Apply button, a list of results will appear with the option of further filtering by Language or Content type.
